Sometimes being a racing historian is really worthwhile.  

In 1977, a very pretty young lady named Cheryl Burgard decided she was gonna be a racecar driver. She wanted to race sports cars, but the nearest track to race those was over 2 hours away. Being from East Berlin, Pa, a few miles from Lincoln Speedway her friends convinced her that that was the place to race.

She got a Kenny Weld copy sprint that was built by driver Bobby Brooks (who I've become friends with in recent years). She had a tough go of it and regularly got lapped in a heat race, sometimes twice in a heat. She did record one top ten in a feature by basically finishing in an attrition filled race. However, later in the season, she was terribly burned in a crash, couldn't get her belts undone. She later after recovery decided go go out on her own terms, somebody in the Midwest gave her a ride.

I remembered seeing a picture of her wearing a fire suit that Doug Wolfgang lent her, on a Facebook discussion her niece commented that she never heard that story. Unfortunately, Cheryl passed away several years ago.

I managed to find someone who had the picture in a magazine and not only showed the picture, but agreed to mail the entire magazine to her and her family at no cost. Her family was thrilled to have that as they'd never seen it before.
