Weekend Trivia: "Modified/Sportsman Car Owners of the 60's "& 70's |
Author:3-Wide

I was thinking the other day how few actual car owners there are anymore that actually tow a car to the track, and then have a steady (or sometimes not so steady) driver take a seat behind the wheel. It still happens I think in sprint car racing, but it is certainly a rarity when it comes to modifieds and sportsman.... Remember the big wooden point standings boards/signs that were posted across from the concession stand at Flemington? They always listed out the "Car Owner" standings separately from the "Driver" standings. I remember most nights I would stop by and stare up at those boards... figuring out which driver drove for which car owner and then trying to figure out why the position/rankings in the standings didn't always match (driver and owner.) So... the question is, what car owners do you think of from back in the 60's and 70's... that although they might have taken a few trips behind the wheel, were definitely known as being a car owner more than for their driving. Provide "Car Owner's Name", "Car #", and if you want, add a few names of the drivers who sat behind the wheel for them. Since we have both Dirt and Asphalt fans here, please add if it was "Dirt" or "Asphalt." Let's see what you guys come up... Those that might be considered somewhat well known, and those that maybe weren't so well known, but who built and/or fielded a car/cars mainly for someone else to drive. |

John: I was thinking of the yellow 4T7. Do not think Mike ever drove it, but maybe Hager did? Also there was a white #47 coupe with blue lettering in the 67-68 ish timeframe that ran at Flemington. Russ |

Heck of a list. I'd like to add: The Vic Gilbert 147 was driven on asphalt by Augie Moschera in the early to mid 60s and then the Taylor twins, who also drove Gilbert's 47 and 148. Pappy Smith's 107 was driven, also on asphalt, by Franny Steinmetz and then Augie Moschera (after he left the 147). Augie's last feature win came in the 107 at Wall in 1966. I didn't see any mention of Harold Cope and his # 1. Cope's hot rods were driven by Rags Carter and Bobby Rossell. I don't know why but I want say Bob Malzahn may have also been behind the wheel of the Cope 1. And speaking of # 1, did anyone mention Wally Marks. I recall that George Hudick owned the 22 and 26 white coupes that ran Reading and occasionally Flemington. I recall Red Coffin driving one of the Hudick cars but can't remembe which one. Scott Ely2 |
