I just read that Jimmy Blewett and Andrew Krause finished 1-2 in the most recent Wall sportsman feature. I do recall that, in the past, Wall mod drivers have occasionally competed in sportsman races. I'm not in favor of it but was wondering if any 3Widers out there can offer their opinion as to whether acceptable or not, and why its good for racing (the track, the drivers, the fans). I not aware of any other tracks that allow the practice. Not trying to create a controversy, just finding it an interesting topic for discussion. Scott Ely |

Let me add that I have no problem with modified drivers who have, for whatever reason leave the mods and switch to the sportsman division. Its those "active" mod drivers that occasionally run with the sportsman that I'm referring to. Scott Ely |

Growing up, "Sportsman" was a class full of grown men, that chose that class for many reasons. Price, for one, cheaper than a modified. Their entire career would or could be spent in that class. Just a money thing. There is no lesser talent in a sportsman lifer. Today, I gues, it's a little more of a developmental class. If a mod driver gets an occasional ride in a sportsma, no big deal. Jimmy drove a car that was prepared for Ryan Flores to race Saturday, but he became ill Friday night, so Jimmy drove it. Not sure on Andrews deal but I heard the track operator was not happy with it and it's her son! lol
Devils Bowl Speedway in Vermont runs a 10k to win crate race. Brett Hearn and a few other Mod drivers run it and win it. All a track has to do is implement a participation quota, than they basically can't run unless they meet it. |

I think Wall did that with the Garden State Classic originally. You had to run there 3 times before you were allowed to enter the Garden State Classic. 300 laps 100 mile od Mod Madness. There used to be a practice on the Tuesday night preceding the Classic.
Later the GSC became Open Comp. This is when Charlie J and Jimmy Spencer showed up! |

Devil Bowls headline division is called Sportsman/Modified. During Corona virus shut down drivers Kenny Tremont, Adam Pierson"who was a crate sportsman driver from Bear Ridge " and Demetrius Drellous ran there weekly. If the crate sportsman was the headline division and attracted invaders that's fine . As a support division when they get a bonus purse, which usually isn't that much more than weekly and is taken by premier is wrong."Cherry Picking". |

Thanks for everyone's imput. I guess you can't blame a modified guy running in one of "today's" (aka crates) sportsman races if the track allows it. My apologies for mentioning Andrew Krause finishing 2nd in the Wall sportsman feature as I don't believe he was even in it. My excuse, just turned 74. And, I did grow up where the sportsman ran with the modifieds at all the tracks I visited in the 60s and early 70s. The sportsman/crates of today were known as limited sportsman back then. I recall the cubic inch limit was 318 for them. Scott Ely |
