On May 30, 1964, Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald died as a result of injuries at the 500. Eddie was born here in the Lehigh Valley (Allentown) and is buried in Holy Saviour Cemetery in Bethlehem. Standing at his gravesite you can feel the history surrounding the man and the events of that fateful day in 1964. A checkered flag and a small race car serve as tributes at his gravesite.

I visited the site, with the help of Jack Kromer, and Greg is absolutely correct, you feel something when you are there. Today I bet, more than usual.

Hard to believe that this was 60 years ago. It is a day I will never forget as I watched it live on close circuit at the Lincoln Theatre. I had just seen him and everyone at Trenton just weeks before and couldn't believe what I was watching on that screen. Then to make the day even worse I come home to hear the my hero Fireball Roberts was near death after his wreck at Charlotte only to die a few weeks later. Back in 2001 I met a nurse who was Fireballs nurse who told me about how they didn't understand how he lived that long as injuries and burns were the worst they had ever seen. I think about these guys often in the month of May and remember how this day almost got me to stop going to the races .
