AMA Flat Track announcers keep calling Bridgeport Speedway a "half mile". I thought it was smaller. 4/10 or so?

What is it? Not trying to stir up anything. Just curious.

They may use a different measuring system for motorcycles

Whatever narrative works to sell the show is what they will use. We've all seen this done for Kutztown.... is it a 1/5 Mile, 1/4 Mile ? Depends if USAC sprints or modifiers are running...., then it's a 1/4 Mile. If 600 micros or slingshots are running, it's a 1/5 Mile. I personally don't care one way or the othet as I'm there every week regardless. But I do see a difference as how it's described.

Might have something to do with the bigger they claim the track is, the faster they can claim the average speed is when they do the math. 

Just a guess, with a little bit of my "spidey marketing sense" probably over thinking it....

Either way it was great racing. Amazing amount of respect from every single driver.  They have the "get hurt" factor which is missing in most racing, especially asphalt racing. 

Where IS the measurement taken that determinds the size of a speedway?

And to add fuel to the fire, so I guess the "American Flat Track" cycles don't always run on flat tracks (i.e. Bridgeport ain't flat).  Scott Ely

More fuel, I know it's tradition, but that flagger is gonna get whacked. 

I googled how to measure an oval track. Apparentl, nascar measures 15 feet from the wall. And I guess that's the outside wall. 

Back in the 60's USAC measured 3 foot from the inside guard rail.

Kevin-  I watched the replay of the Bridgeport flat track show yesterday.  Great show, was more than I expected.  HOWEVER, I totally agree with you regarding the flag man!  Unless he has reflexes of a superhuman, he's tempting fate!  Scott Ely

You know that the logical way to measure a track is to draw a line in the center of the width of the track (keeping the line in the center even when the width changes) and compute that length.  But I know the sanctioning bodies and individual tracks all have their own ideas.

Shape, flat or banked, tite or big corners means alot more than size... Just stagger and gear correctly, done deal...Just dont go to dorney park or Bowman Grey with anything nice...Now Syracuse that was a great Show and Shine, flat but really fast and fun....I'll quit here...
