New Jersey racing has lost one of its greatest, Don Stives. One of the nicest guys you could meet.  One of the most versatile drivers on dirt or asphalt there was.  Knew Don from Wall Stadium from the 80's but became good friends in the 2000's, kept in touch when we could.  Rest in peace my friend and Godspeed. Condolences to the family and friends of Don. He left behind many fond memories.

My dad knew him very well in my much younger days so we'd frequently stop by his trailer to chat after the races at EWS. I got to sit in his modified once in the early 70s. As I got older I'd run into him from time to time and he knew I was Bobs son. I wanna say our paths crossed at a track in Florida once too. A very nice man. I'm saddened by this news.

Don would come back north for deer season and I would sometimes stop over at his hunting club and visit him just to show respect for a real old time racer. Rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Don.  My Mom was talking to Don after the races at Windsor when the subject came up on how difficult it was getting thru to Windsor on those "iffy" weather nights.  At the time, Don lived real close to the track and offered his phone number to my Mom.  From that point on, Mom would call Don to see if there was any activity at the track and get his opinion on whether Windsor was running or not.  I recall that Don was always "spot on" as to Windsor running or not.  I aslo remember Don binging his small block #3 red coupe (called "The "Unrat"?) in a converted school bus.  The first one I ever saw.  Scott Ely

Forgot to mention that I think the most dominant sportsman at Wall Stadium (back when the sportsman ran with the modifieds) was the Norcia #81 small block Ford powered coupe with Don Stives behind the wheel.  I know the sportsman started up front, but the big block injected racers (Barney 14, Don House XL-I, Woody Johnson 68, and others) never had it easy getting around Don in the 81.  Which reminds me, Nice guys do finish first!  Scott Ely

He lived on Conover Rd. which basically runs parallel to Airport Rd. Probably half a mile walk thru a field. I'd see his old modifed behind his house every day from my school bus

Don drove my grandfather George Taylor's 93 for a few years. He was a true gentleman and a great driver on dirt as well as asphalt.  He was one of those drivers who always brought the car home in one piece. He was a great ambassador to our sport and always had time to speak with past and present fans. The Taylor family wishes him gods speed

A great race driver on dirt and on asphalt.  A great person, and someone who kept the history of short track racing in his heart even after hanging up the goggles.  We'll certainly miss him here on the board where he would occasionally add his first hand experience on different topics and would post as "DonDownSouth."

I put a few pictures, and a few thoughts of our friend Don on the homepage of them main site:

My condolences go out to Don's wife Sue, Don's sons, and to the many friends of Don Stives.
