Msg ID: 2823563 This Week's Question: Purple Race Cars
Author:3-Wide
7/2/2024 7:24:11 AM

Note:  If responding to this post, please delete the Subject Line and put the Driver's Name and/or Car # in the Subject Line of the post you are creating.  That way others can see what cars/drivers have already been named without reading through each post to check. - Thanks!. Smile

As mentioned a few weeks ago, for some reason, a while back, I was thinking about colors of race cars... and how all these year's later, what cars come to mind when a particular color is mentioned....

So for this week... let's go with "Purple."

It could be a modified/sportsman, dirt/asphalt, sprint car, street stock/late model, stock car, indy car.... whatever, as long as it is a car that you think of when "Purple" race car is mentioned:

So, what cars and or driver's do you remember driving "Purple" cars?

Please provide car #, driver's name, and track raced at if you think it'll help us know which car you're referring to.

As mentioned at the top of this post, please delete the Subject Line and put the Driver's Name and/or Car # in the Subject Line of the post you are creating. That way, people can see the names that have been provided at a quick glance without combing through multiple posts to see if the driver they were going to add had already been provided.

Let's see what you guys come up with....

Jan Opperman drove Bill Smith's purple and white 4x sprint car in the mid west during the 1975 season.  During the 1974 season he drove Fred Aden's lavender [kind of purple] sprint car in USAC and outlaw shows with the numbers 4x and 99 on it.

A Dan Gurney team car, was teammates with Bobby Unser. He nearly won the 1972 Indy 500, during his last pitstop he mistakenly took on fuel from Unser's adjacent pit box late in the race, was penalized.

Hope you guys remember The Vault. Really cool place Joe had together at New Egypt Speedway. Great history and a place to hang and appreciate the history of New Jersey (mostly) auto racing.

A Egge-Hildebrand (spelling?) purple hot rodbehind the wheel. # 9 coupe accounted for the first ever modified feature winner at the East Windsor Speedway in 1965 with Russ Hoek driving.  Their purple #9s were later driven by Ed Farley, Bobby Bottcher and some guy named Gary Balough.  I recall that Balough guy had a decent career(to say the least) in the purple 9s.  Scott Ely

I think you guys hit all of the all purple cars I was thinking of originally, and a bunch more... Here's a few late additions:

Buddy Lazier's #91 (1996 Indy 500 winning car): https://d2i8ejbvsgsqtt.cloudfront.net/gallery/indycar/indy/1996/19960101-nphotographer/med/1996_Buddy_Lazier.jpg

And here's a few more that weren't all purple but might be a good time to mention:

Dave Kneisel:

Billy Pauch:

Chris Grbac:

There's not a whole lot of purple on the #1 or the #7, but for some reason I thought of both of them as having more purple.

Thanks for all the responses!
